John Kerry has instigated a Gallic shrug by declining to communicate French at his initial news conference as an US Secretary of State.
Requested to reply a question with a "little bit of French please", he stated: "Not today. I got to refresh myself on that."
The reaction shocked some in the francophone world as Mr Kerry went to a Swiss boarding school and is well-known to communicate with the language effectively.
He was discussing right after conference his Canadian counterpart in Washington.
Mr Kerry's expertise of French persuaded disapproval from the right-wing US media throughout his failed bid for the presidency in 2004, because of the souring of US-French connections through the warfare in Iraq.
